Frequently Asked Questions

There are many questions and misconceptions that come up with the process of Colon Hydro-therapy. Colon hydro-therapy, or the act of cleansing and purifying the colon, has a long history, and understanding the physiologic and energetic components of the process, assists one's understanding and appreciation for the therapy.

What Is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy is the administration of warm, filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon, where the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis of the colon. This procedure is repeated several times during a session. There are no side-effects and the therapy is gentle, yet very effective. Since this method involves an enclosed system, the waste and gases are removed without discomfort, noise and/or unpleasant odors. At Green Lotus Wellness Center, aromatherapy, breath work, abdominal massage/pressure point massage are included in every session or as needed by the client.
Should I use the Closed-in System or Open-system?
A closed-in system refers specifically to the equipment and method used by the therapist and facility. This chosen method offers an experience that differs from, what the colonic industry calls, an 'open system'. One is not necessarily better than the other, but the overall experience is completely different for the client. It then boils down to client preference. A closed-in system is just as the name implies, completely closed-in, so there are no bodily noises or odors that are experienced during the therapy. The closed-in method is always therapist-assisted, since the therapist needs to be in the room with you to work the device. The device does not work on its own as with an open system. The client is situated comfortably on a standard massage bed with standard bedding/sheets and the entire duration of the therapy provides an open dialogue between the client and the therapist. Coaching from your therapist with this system gives you insight about your progress on the table. Your therapist will typically implement abdominal massage, pressure-point massage, aromatherapy as well as breathing techniques and will encourage you to talk or to meditate/pray to facilitate the cathartic nature of colon cleansing. It is based on your comfort and needs. Typically, closed-in colonics are offered at a higher rate (cost) per session due to the one-on-one coaching between you and your therapist for the entire duration of your cleansing session. Furthermore, closed-in colonics tend to run at a slower pace and are a bit more gentle, yet still very effective; further, people who have gut hypersensitivity tend to have more tolerance for the closed-in method, as it is gentle on the nervous system.
What Are the Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy?
The process of removing unwanted waste, gases and toxins from the body provides the body a systemic boost of energy, vitality, and complete relaxation. Other benefits include: ~Relieving the acute onset of various colon/health disturbances: ~Constipation (Mild to Severe) ~Diarrhea ~Intestinal Infections (e.g. From Traveling or from common colds/flu) ~Abdominal Distention/Flatulence ~Sinus Infections ~Allergies ~Post-surgery (to relieve constipation)*see contraindication form ~Balancing Physiologic Flora of the Colon ~Atonic Colon ~Increasing Energy and Stamina ~Balancing Moods ~Improving Sleep and Concentration ~Reducing Stress ~Detoxification/Cleansing Programs (e.g. Juice Fast/Chelation) (Absolutely Necessary Support) ~Detoxification Through Other Forms of Bodywork (e.g. Reflexology or Massage) (Essential Support) ~Boosting Immune Function ~Increasing Metabolism ~Supporting Skin Vitality ~Anti-Aging ~Managing Weight Loss ~Preventative Approach to Wellness ~Supports Awareness and Transformation
Why Is There A Price Different Between Open And Closed Systems?
The closed-in method is always therapist-assisted, since the therapist needs to be in the room with you to work the device. The device does not work on its own as with an open system.
Will One Session Do The Job?
One session will empty part of the colon. As many doctors have written about in articles, we also agree with the protocol of two sessions in the first week (back to back), two sessions the following week and one a week for the following eight weeks. After completion of all twelve sessions, most clients return every few months for maintenance purposes.
What If I'm On My Period?
Colon Hydrotherapy is perfectly safe during this time, and can decrease the cramping that typically accompanies your period.
Is Colon Hydrotherapy Habit Forming?
Color Hydrotherapy retrains the muscle or bowel to regain strength. After 12 or more sessions, many people regain the normal bowel function of one movement per day. A healthy bowel may have two to three bowel movements a day, depending on what you eat. Trouble is usually recognized by an individual as constipation or diarrhea. These danger signs along with foul smelling stool and gas may be overlooked. Golden brown used to be considered the normal color, but now that vegetables are recommended, the color reflects the vegetables. During constipation, you may observe a darkening of the stool because of the much longer transition time in your system. The colon will distribute the results of decay, fermentation and putrefaction into the blood. Dr. William Tyler, ND
Are Dietary Changes Necessary Before & After Colonics?
It is suggested to forego meat the day before a session. We recommend that you eat and drink lightly preceding your session. Some clients may choose to fast the day before or the day of their session. We suggest that you eat a moderate amount of gentle and nourishing foods including green leafy salads, veggie soups, fruit or vegetable juices which are great options to enjoy before your colonic. Drink plenty of water and refrain from eating anything two hours prior.
Can I Add Anything To My Colonic Session?
Yes. You can choose to have light therapy, essential oils, a castor oil pack, a coffee enema or a cleansing enema.
